iPad Adoption Skyrockets

Mary Meeker, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and a highly respected technology industry analyst, recently published her 2012 Internet Trends report which includes several interesting facts relevant to the iPad and tablet devices:

iPad adoption (# of units sold) has not only surpassed the iPhone, but the rate of iPad growth is 3 times that of the iPhone

29% of US adults own a tablet or e-reader (up from less than 2% three years ago)

Tablets and smartphones outsold PCs (desktops/notebooks) in 2012 and their installed base will exceed that of PCs by the second quarter of 2013

Apple reported it sold a record 3 million iPads in three days following the launch of the iPad mini and fourth generation iPad in November 2012.

iPad Leads Tablet Market

IDC iPad Forecast

International Data Corporation, a leading market intelligence firm, recently raised its tablet forecast for 2012 and beyond. IDC expects worldwide tablet shipments to reach 122.3 million in 2012 and forecasts 172.4 million shipments in 2013.

In their report, IDC notes the iPad holds 53.8% of the tablet market with an 11% lead over its closest competitor. IDC expects Apple to maintain at least a 10% market share advantage with the iPad through 2016.

iPad: Fastest Growing SMB Technology

A national Business Journals survey of small and mid-sized businesses reveals just how essential the iPad has become to this large economic segment. The findings show that iPad usage nearly quadrupled among the SMB market growing from 9% in 2010 to 34% in 2011 indicating that “the iPad is the fastest growing technology among the SMB market.”

Godfrey Phillips, VP of Research at the Business Journals, says “for SMB owners, productivity and efficiency, which used to be the central benefits of technology, are now declining in importance compared to accessibility. Now, it’s crucial that business owners have access to their business information and data, anytime and anywhere. The iPad, as well as smartphones and cloud computing, are all part of this new trend and are experiencing significant growth as a result of that need.
